The Best of 2009

Now what would a music blog be without someone summarizing their favourite tracks from the previous year. I'll be the first to admit that it begins to get a bit redundant, and you never know which lists are actually worth checking out. While some lists are true to popular belief, there is always the pessimist who refuses to acknowledge that the best songs usually mean they have become 'pop'ular at one time or another. These are the people who always put together some huge list of tracks that you have never even heard of before. Well, I may be a bit of a hypocrite. There could be a few songs on my list that you may have never heard of before but they are all simply amazing.

Let me start by saying that my list is highly influenced by the two completely opposite residences that I had the privilege of playing through out 2009; one night was inspired by electro, while the other top 40. So basically, my list is just a collective of random songs that I loved playing the most. There's no analytical analysis, or systematic structure to my collection. People take these "wrap up's" way to seriously.

Here it is. 20 songs in no particular order that I enjoyed playing over the past year. * (Tried to keep the remixes to a minimum)

Heads Will Roll (A-Trak Remix) - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Shooting Stars - Bag Raiders
Use Somebody - Kings of Leon
Moombah - Afrojack
Pon De Floor - Major Lazer
1901 - Phoenix
Let the Bass Kick - Dj Chuckie feat Jermaine Dupri
Fixin to Thrill (Villains Remix) - Dragonette
Rock Paper Scissors - Fukkk Off
Best I Ever Had - Drake
Animal - Mike Snow
Nothing to Worry About - Peter Bjorn & John
Empire State of Mind - Jay Z feat Alicia Keys
Little Secrets - Passion Pit
Sleepy Head - Passion Pit
Two Weeks - Grizzly Bear
K'Naan - Wavin Flag
Day N Night (Crookers Remix) - Kid Cudi
Turbo Love - Bag Raiders

NYE

This Thursday at Element Nightclub, we have a super special party planned to jump start everybody into the new year. We also have a super special guest joining us. From Friday Night Sessions and Saturday Night Seduction at Element Nightclub, we have the "Italian Stallion" AKA "Mr. Marshall A" collaborating with Trekk on the wheels of steel. Many of you may know Marshall for his prominent success in organizing some of the largest shows Victoria has witnessed. He is also the co-host of New Era Radio at CFUV Victoria and has a major list of other accomplishments that are just to extensive for me to get into. We are all ecstatic to have Marshall joining us for this shambolic night.

Doors open at 8:00PM and tickets are $15. I suggest you get down to Element early and at least get your stamp. If you would like more details please go to our Facebook page which can be found here.

PS. Happy Birthday Uncle Marsh.

Update

Hi everyone, sorry for the delay. I just wanted to remind everyone that there will be NO Lights Out this Thursday (Dec 24th) because it's Christmas Eve! I know it sucks but really, we should all have more important things to do. (Not including those who do not celebrate Christmas.)

Pictures from last week should be up either by the end of today or tomorrow. Xavier mentioned to me that he took over 400 pictures ! Of course, not all of those will be posted but it just goes to show how rad of night it was. Thank you to everyone who came!

Lights Out will return on December 31st for an amazing New Years Eve Party. Advance tickets have already sold out but there will be tickets for sale at the door. Make sure you get there early. For all the details please visit this link.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.

10/12/2009

Thanks to Xavier Walker, we have a bunch of outstanding new photos above. Check them out if you have a minute. Have you noticed that the quality on the blog is far better than that of Facebook? If you haven't, I just told you. That's why we recommend you check the photos out here; plus everything looks twice as good, including the people. Looking forward to tomorrow. See ya then.

The Launch !

First of all, thank you to everyone who made it to the Lights Out  launch party last week! It was a total success because of each, and every one of you. Xavier took so many amazing photographs and we are ecstatic to have him on board.

If you haven't yet noticed, the blog is where we will be doing all of the latest updates and incorporating both music, media, and a bunch of other fun stuff too. If need be, you can always refer to the Lights Out facebook group for the lowdown.

Personally, I would like to thank Mr. Marshall for coming through on Thursday and helping us host the night. That was a major assistance because yes, DJ's do get nervous too. A special thanks to the bosses Bret & Danielle for making this possible, Ruairi for the amazing lights, and DJ Clinton for the crazy visuals.

I look forward to seeing a bunch of familiar faces next Thursday. Lets make the next one even crazier ... can we?

*Music downloads will be updated shortly.

Launch Party !

On December 3rd, 2009 Lights Out will officially make its debut. All the proceeds from the opening event are going directly to local clubs & charities. Tickets are only $5 and all drinks are $3.

Victoria is finally going to have a Thursday that is fresh and modern. A night to get excited about. No longer will you have to suffer through mediocre music and inferior ambience for the enjoyment of cheap drinks. We pride ourselves in serving our patrons with only the best sights, sounds, and ... well you get it. Did I mention drinks are only $3 ?

I hope to see you all on Thursday December 3rd ! Please check out our music chart for the latest jamz. It is updated by DJ's Trekk & Coki regularly and is the easiest way to hear all the bangers before your friends do.
